(Excerpt) Interview with Prompong Hakk : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Prompong Hakk : In order to create a better user experience our external Design language was defined by two contrasting values: sturdy but soft. We wanted users to feel at ease when being asked to use a security device without human operators. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Prompong Hakk : In contrast to MBAS2, MBAS 1 was designed as a more advanced looking terminal that could have a place at international border crossings such as airports. Its unibody Design keeps everything compact and utilitarian without looking too intimidating. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Prompong Hakk : With MBAS2 currently in development stage, MBAS1 will soon be put for consideration due to its award winning status. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Prompong Hakk : The Design project lasted for 3 months. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Prompong Hakk : The Design was commissioned by our client Chanwanich Company Limited. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Prompong Hakk : The Design will be produced and managed by Chanwanich Company Limited. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Prompong Hakk : Chanwanich is one of Thailand silent leaders in technology which naturally inspired is to work with them. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Prompong Hakk : I'd say that for this Design I was probably most inspired by Dieter Rahms whom I met at a Design Conference in Bangkok. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Prompong Hakk : This is a business to government or private security product. Of course it will be used by all sorts of travelers which is why it is equipped with multiple language options. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Prompong Hakk : It's milestone in Design when it come to this industry's Design choices. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Prompong Hakk : MBAS stands for Multi-Biometric-Aquisition-System. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Prompong Hakk : Sketching and CAD. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Prompong Hakk : The integration of all technical components in this unibody cut out Design that also features a removable fingerprint unit for easy maintenance or other attachments. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Prompong Hakk : All internal engineering was developed in house at shakes. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Prompong Hakk : MBAS1 utilizes modern technology to transform the way we cross borders. In this case technology provides the means to make that change. However, it's also technology that often scares us from understanding it fully. This is why we took to designing a terminal that looked welcoming and friendly. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. Prompong Hakk : Partly, we conducted a survey to determine the right angle for the display. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Prompong Hakk : The product is in its development stage still. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?.
